About Us
Our History
Established in May 1991, the Koori Mail is a fortnightly national newspaper reporting on the issues that matter to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
We average more than 100,000 readers each fortnight, according to McNair Ingenuity Research. And our audited circulation is more than 9200 copies each fortnight (ABC audit).
The Koori Mail is not just a successful organisation – it’s also a true Aboriginal success story. The newspaper is owned jointly by five small Aboriginal organisations in Bundjalung country, on the far north coast of New South Wales: Bundjalung Tribal Society at Lismore; Bunjum Co-operative at Cabbage Tree Island; Buyinbin Co-operative at Casino; Kurrachee Cooperative at Coraki; and Nungera Co-operative at Maclean.
In September 2023, we proudly launched our online shop. It features all our deadly merchandise and many local Indigenous models. The Koori Mail online shop delivers nationwide, and can be purchased from our Lismore office.
Every cent of profit made by the newspaper goes to Indigenous Australians – in the form of dividends, sponsorships or scholarships to help our people.
We give Indigenous Australians a voice missing in the mainstream media.
About The Artwork
Knowledge, Culture, Country, Connection
This special bespoke artwork was created through a process of deep listening, and stories told by our Board of Directors from the communities of Lismore, Maclean, Coraki, Ballina and Casino.
Riki Salam, an accomplished Indigenous artist and graphic designer, listened to these stories and created our iconic artwork.
It is based on the concentric circles of a Bora - Ring, (Casino having one of the biggest Bora Rings on Country) where people come together for Ceremony, initiation and for important business. Each layer represents different aspects of the overall story; whether it be cultural, natural, representational or technological. The Koori Mail brings many people together allowing them to share culture and exchange knowledge.
The Koori Mail, where knowledge is exchanged, Culture is shared, the Country comes together and is connected keeping the Voice of Indigenous Australia - Strong, Proud and Relevant.
